I was wondering if it's possible to beatmatch a track/sample/loop in ableton to whatever is playing on the mixer (ie-cds from cdjs). If so, does anyone know how to do it? I wanted to try it out with some chill (although this may not need to be beatmatched exactly), then move on to trying it with psytrance. Any help would be great.

Version 7

I know it'd probably be easier to load tracks into ableton and overlay loops/effects there, but I wanna try this out and see how it goes. All these things I keep thinking up to do with ableton are pushing me closer to becoming a laptop dj- yikes!

The answer you seek is called "Tempo Nudge"

I was told to use the TAP button to beat match tracks, but I assume I'd have to use both of these....Maybe I should just play around with this at home first and see how it goes.

If the TAP is the answer, do you actually have to press it on each down beat or just 1, then it does the rest?

Yup, we can discuss more there. I'm definitely bringing my laptopto nab some plug-ins from yur brother too.

I'm gonna try this out a bit when I get home from work today too, so we'll see how it goes.

Read, learn, use.

http://www.vinkalmann.com/VINKALMANN_Warping_Guide.pdf  right click save as.

Tap could help, but I doubt it.  you best bet would be to set the seg bpm (right under the warp button) manually and then use tempo nudge to adjust.

So I would need to warp my tracks before hand (or while playing), then adjust. I assume the nudge moves the tempo up and keeps it there.

If this is the case, then it's not exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to have it auto beat match for me while I play to create a multi deck effect, but only have to worry about manually beat matching the 2 decks.

nudge doesn't really move the tempo.  think of it as moving the platter on a turntable or cd player.

I'll think about the other part of your post and respond when I get home from work.

Ok, that's more unfortunate then Sad. I wonder if running it through a midi controller would help do anything. I guess I'll need to research this a bit more.

Oh well, if there's not a way, I'll have to wrangle up a third deck and see how that sounds.

I'm kinda having a hard time visualizing what you are trying to accomplish.  We will talk more about this on sunday.  Where there's a will there's a way.
